There’s a genuine tension here worth naming directly: most brands want their tees light and breathable, but chenille needs weight to sit well. If you’re set on chenille and also set on keeping the garment as light as possible, that hybrid weight is usually the honest middle ground to discuss.

Chest placement stays the practical default here, more strongly than it does on a hoodie — back or large-format chenille placements are even less advisable on a tee, since the added stiffness and weight disrupt a lightweight garment’s drape more noticeably than they would on fleece that already has its own structure. It’s worth setting expectations honestly at this stage too. A design that looks great as a full chest patch on a hoodie mockup often needs to shrink by 20–30% to sit comfortably on tee-weight fabric without disrupting the drape. Beyond the standard chenille checks — flat edges with no lifting, even loop density, consistent yarn color — a tee has one additional thing worth checking that a hoodie doesn’t really need: drape distortion. Lay the shirt flat and look at how the fabric around the patch sits. If it pulls, puckers, or visibly changes how the garment hangs compared to an unpatched area, that’s the fabric telling you the patch is heavier than what it can comfortably support.
Check backing color against the garment in real light, not just under factory lighting, since color matching that looks fine under one light source can look off under another. And handle the sample the way a customer would wear it — the coarse, looped chenille texture can feel more noticeably scratchy against skin on a tee worn without another layer than the same patch would against a hoodie.
Care instructions are worth passing along here too, and for a slightly different reason than on a hoodie. The patch adds real weight to one area of an otherwise light garment, and repeated high-heat drying stresses that uneven weight distribution more than it would on a heavier, more uniform hoodie. Cold wash, inside-out, low or no tumble heat — the same baseline advice as any chenille piece, but worth actually communicating to your customer on a tee specifically, since the consequences of skipping it show up faster on lighter fabric.
