Hotfix rhinestones come with a heat-activated adhesive already on the back — no glue gun, no permanent bonding until heat is applied. There are two ways to get them onto a garment. Hand-application uses a heated wand to place stones one at a time, which gives full creative control for intricate, one-off designs but is slow and labor-heavy. Template application arranges stones face-down on an adhesive transfer sheet following a digitized pattern, then heat-presses the entire design onto the garment in a single pass.

Fabric and Construction: Why Heat Press Stability Matters

Rhinestone application needs a flat, stable surface under the heat press. Heavier GSM resists warping under that pressure, and a slight give in a knit fleece actually helps the stones seat properly into the fabric’s texture. Go too light or too stretchy, though, and the press can leave a subtly rippled surface around the design — not always obvious immediately, but visible once the garment moves.

Design Placement, Stone Sizing, and File Requirements

Stone size is measured in "SS" units. SS6–SS10 stones suit fine detail and small lettering; SS16–SS30 read as bold, statement-piece sizing. Most of our designs mix sizes deliberately — smaller stones for detail, larger ones for visual weight — rather than using one size throughout.

Stone material is a separate choice from size. Glass and crystal stones catch more light and hold their sparkle longer, which is what most brands picture when they say "rhinestone." Acrylic stones cost less and weigh less, which matters on a design with heavy coverage, but they scratch more easily over time and have a duller shine by comparison. We’ll talk through the trade-off with you based on your design density and price point before locking in a spec.

Chest placement follows the usual 8–10cm convention, though with rhinestones, stone density matters more to the finished look than exact width does. Back placements are possible but less common on hoodies than on lighter tees, mainly because full-coverage stone designs add real weight and the heat press has to work harder against a bulkier garment. What Separates a Bond That Holds From One That Falls Off

Bond strength is the whole game with rhinestones, and it comes down to heat press accuracy — most hotfix adhesive activates around 150–165°C for a specific dwell time. Too little heat or pressure and the bond never fully sets; too much and you risk scorching the fabric or over-melting the adhesive, which can shift stones out of position before they cool.

We press-test a stone at the edge of every design before it ships — a gentle pull shouldn’t lift it. Beyond bond strength, check alignment and spacing on template-applied designs; a template that shifted even slightly during pressing shows up as uneven gaps once you look closely. And check the stones themselves for clarity and consistency — a cloudy or chipped stone stands out immediately against clean ones next to it.
